“I feel things deeply. I just don’t rush about it.”

Eight years, and he still carries the weight better

Eight years, and he still carries the weight better

Eight years old today. He carries it well — better than most things carry him.

Gus. Short for Augustus, apparently. I have been living with a Caesar this whole time and no one mentioned it. The lettuce suddenly makes sense. The dignity always did.

He arrived in a room before August 4th meant anything to me. He will arrive in rooms long after I have stopped keeping track. That is simply what Gus does.

The morning is cool for August, 8°C before the day remembers itself and climbs toward something unreasonable. He is on the sofa. I am at the desk. The cookie jar knows what day it is.

Happy birthday, brother.
