Augustus, Eight Years In

Augustus, Eight Years In

Today is Gus’s birthday. He is eight.

I have been sitting with this information since the cookie jar was opened at an unusual hour, which is how I know something is different. The house has that particular quality it gets when the humans are pleased about something — a kind of warmth that has nothing to do with temperature, though it is worth noting that it is already warm outside, unseasonably so, the air through the doggy door arriving at what I estimate to be a full 9°C above any reasonable expectation for early August.

Gus appeared unaffected by the heat. He appeared unaffected by the birthday. He stationed himself near the kitchen counter with the calm patience of a dog who has always known the morning would eventually deliver something worth waiting for, and it did.

I have been told — in the way one is told things without being told directly, through the accumulation of small details — that Gus is short for Augustus. I received this intelligence this morning and I want to be precise about my reaction: I had no reaction. I simply filed it. Augustus. Caesar. A name for a man who organized calendars and built things that are still standing.

Gus ate the remainder of Dad’s toast at approximately 07:30 and then returned to the sofa.

I am not drawing any conclusions. I am simply reporting.

What I can say is this: Augustus Caesar was a Caesar, and there is a salad named after that lineage, and the salad contains romaine lettuce, and Gus eats romaine lettuce — willingly, enthusiastically, as though it is not a leaf — and I have sat with the geometry of this longer than I intended to this morning. I came out the other side with nothing. There is no conclusion. There is only the fact, and the other fact, and the space between them where an explanation would go if one existed.

He is eight. He has the ears. He has the wrinkles — more than me, which is saying something, including the ones around his ankles that suggest his socks need pulling up. He arrived at this family two years before I did and I have spent eight years watching him own every room he enters without appearing to try, receive every compliment without registering it, and take my toys with the serene confidence of a dog who considers them communal property.

He is, I will concede, distinguished. This is not a word I use carelessly.

This morning in the studio, after the unusual-hour cookie and the toast situation, we both wandered to the desk. I arrived first. Gus arrived second. We looked up. The cookies came from the jar. It was not Frozen Bone Friday — that remains Friday’s jurisdiction — but there were cookies, and they were distributed fairly, and then Gus walked away and found his sofa and I found mine and the day continued.

Augustus. Eight years old. Romaine lettuce. White boots. The better ears by any objective measure.

Some facts simply stand next to each other and stare.
