The Mathematics of Friday Evening

The Mathematics of Friday Evening

The frozen bone waits in the freezer, and I wait for the frozen bone. This is the mathematics of Friday evening.

The house carries a particular restlessness today — car keys lifted and set down, the rustle of papers that suggest departure. First Friday in town, which means the humans will venture out to examine art while sampling complimentary wine and beer. I have observed this ritual before. They return with a particular lightness, discussing colors and textures with the enthusiasm typically reserved for new kibble flavors.

The irony is not lost on me that while they pursue culture downtown, I will be here pursuing the ancient art of marrow extraction. Both activities involve focus, appreciation, and the occasional moment of transcendence. The difference is that my evening comes with certainty.
