The smoke was low and particular this morning — not fire-smell exactly, just the air deciding something without telling anyone.
Dad moved differently too. Keys, leashes, the garage door — all of it, and then Hollinshead, and the whole drive I was certain something had been forgotten but couldn’t locate what.
It was us. We were the thing. No collars. Just ears and wrinkles and the morning on our necks like we’d come from somewhere older than any of this.
Nobody mentioned it. The other dogs didn’t mention it. The people smiled and said their usual things.
Gus received this information the way Gus receives most information — with complete composure and his muzzle toward the nearest friendly hand.
I noted it. Filed it. Walked on.
There is a version of freedom that arrives by accident. It sits differently than the kind you’re given.
