The Freezer Knows What Friday Owes

The Freezer Knows What Friday Owes

Friday is tomorrow.

That is all I know. That is everything.

We went this morning — all four of us, Gus and me and both of them — while the air still had some honesty left in it. I ran. I chased the ball. It left my mouth when I threw myself at it and I picked it up again and no one needs to know any of this. By the time we came home the ponderosas were already giving up their smell to the heat. 35°C by afternoon, they say. I do not say. I simply note that the sun patch in the family room is no longer inviting. It is a warning.

But it is Thursday. And Friday has not arrived.

Something is owed. The freezer knows.
