“I feel things deeply. I just don’t rush about it.”

On the Sudden Necessity of Velocity

On the Sudden Necessity of Velocity

The zoomies arrive without announcement, as they should. One moment I am contemplating the snow through glass, the next I am a blur of ears and determination thundering down the hardwood hall.

The squeaker becomes airborne. Physics bends. I become briefly, gloriously, just a dog who runs faster than his own ears can follow. The donut bed witnesses my launch. The studio door frames my landing. Gus lifts his head from the sofa with the resigned expression of someone watching a younger brother discover flight.

Outside, April snow settles on the junipers like a cosmic joke. Inside, I am proving that sometimes the best response to weather is pure velocity and the satisfying squeak of a well-loved toy meeting its destiny against the bedroom door.
